Jump$tart Clearinghouse

Jump$tart Personal Finance Clearinghouse

WHAT WE DO:

The Jump$tart Clearinghouse provides an easy-to-use, free online database of current personal finance materials designed for teaching and learning.  Targeted users include educators, parents and students from kindergarten through college. Many of the materials are also suitable for adults as well.  Established in the 1990s, the Clearinghouse continues to grow rapidly as more people turn to the Internet for up-to-date financial information and teaching tools.

The Clearinghouse receives more than 40,000 page views per month. It is available to anyone with access to the Internet. No registration, sign-in, or passwords are required, and the service is provided at no cost to the user. The direct Internet address is www.jumpstartclearinghouse.org

WHAT WE OFFER

  • CDs, DVDs, interactive online programs, lesson plans, teaching guides, textbooks, informational brochures, simulation games and posters are among the types of materials included in the Clearinghouse.  Users can limit their search by selecting the topic or keyword, language, grade level and type of material they want.  They can also search by title or publisher, and they can sort available titles by price and most recent entry.
  • The Clearinghouse provides brief descriptions and complete ordering information for nearly 800 titles. The user orders items directly from the publisher or downloads from the Web. The Clearinghouse does not distribute materials directly.
  • More than 300 resources are offered absolutely free.  In fact, a growing number of free resources can be downloaded instantly, a serious advantage for busy educators and students searching for a quick response.
  • Materials listed in the Jump$tart Clearinghouse are reviewed for appropriateness using the Jump$tart Educational Materials Review Checklist as a guide to selecting materials for the database.
  • Organizations that submit materials to the Clearinghouse include national leaders in education, publishers and authors, financial services firms and the government, including many Jump$tart partners.

WHAT WE NEED:

To promote awareness, the Jump$tart Clearinghouse needs:

  • Links to the Clearinghouse Web site www.jumpstartclearinghouse.org from Web sites of partners and state coalitions
  • New personal finance educational resources to be submitted to the Clearinghouse by partners, authors and publishers
  • Funding to expand awareness of the Clearinghouse among educators and other users, through educational journals, newsletters, exhibits and presentations at state and national education meetings

WHAT’S NEW:

The Skinny on Credit Cards: How to Master the Credit Card Game

This paperback book humorously defines a deadbeat (in card company talk) as someone who pays off their dredit card balance in full every month. The book gives the reader the know-how to make credit cards an empowering financial tool instead of a trap.  It discusses this complex financial topic in a way that is easy to understand.  We learn about the great convenience of that little piece of plastic, along with the risk of heartache and stress.

YouAreHere – FTC Microsite for Kids

This free online program takes kids to the virtual shopping mall where they find games and activities that let them experience advertising, competition and the mission of the Federal Trade Commission.  Teachers find fact sheets with background information and activities to reinforce the main message.

For detailed information about these and other educational resources, go to www.jumpstartclearinghouse.org. You can search by title and also by topic, grade level or source.
