The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation
WHO WE ARE:
The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3), education not-for-profit founded in 1947, promotes the study and teaching of risk management and insurance (RMI) to varied audiences. Our education programs and materials are developed and presented by noted professors from some of the most recognized collegiate RMI programs.
WHAT WE DO:
We encourage the teaching of risk management and insurance at the K-12 level through teacher education. We also provide scholarships for teachers to attend our Institutes through our One Teacher-at-a-Time program. We supply professionally produced classroom materials and discussion guidelines for teachers to introduce insurance concepts to their students. Our Ambassador Program provides a forum for college students to share their experiences in risk management and insurance with younger audiences. Our goal is to make students aware of the impact insurance has on their daily lives and their long-term financial stability. We also encourage them to consider the varied insurance career options that match their own personal goals and talents.
The Griffith Foundation supports college and university RMI programs through program grants, faculty symposia, student scholarships, and programs for Gamma Iota Sigma, the RMI professional student fraternity. We assist with the development of teaching materials, such as case studies, and with the expansion of RMI degree programs and curriculum.
In addition to our scholastic programs, The Griffith Foundation educates public policymakers so they carefully consider the implications of any pending legislation related to insurance. Our policymaker education programs are not driven by any industry allegiance or particular ideology. They are based on the belief that informed legislators will make better decisions on insurance-related issues when they understand the industry, its products and the role of insurance in society.
WHAT’S NEW:
The Insurance Literacy Standards is a new program created to improve appropriate grade-level understanding of insurance, risk management, and related topics. Taking direction from Jump$tart Coalition National Standards in K-12 Personal Finance Education, they are organized into sections for students in grades 4, 8 and 12, and the literature includes professionally produced support material, which is engaging and relevant. Upon completion of the coursework, students should be able to identify various risks effectively, understand the importance of adequate insurance protection, and grasp the impact insurance and risk management choices have on daily life and financial security. They should also be able to identify some new career options available to them.
WHAT WE NEED:
The Foundation strongly believes in the mission of Jump$tart, and through the spirit of the organization, we are always looking for partners with whom we can collaborate to further financial literacy education. We are seeking opportunities for collaboration with organizations that can enhance our content and delivery of programs to high schools, community colleges and universities. We also encourage anyone who knows a teacher who currently teaches insurance, or would like to teach insurance and risk management in his or her classroom, to forward our information.
