NJ Jump$tart Coalition - August 2015

The New Jersey Jump$tart Chapter, the New Jersey Coalition for Financial Education (NJCFE) is a nonprofit organization, focused on improving the personal financial literacy of New Jersey’s citizens by promoting personal finance education for all ages. The coalition believes that all New Jersey citizens must have the financial literacy skills necessary to make informed financial decisions. The coalition consists of more than 1,500 members and representatives of government agencies, schools, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that provide financial education and related services. NJCFE works to improve the financial well being of New Jersey residents through workshops, symposiums, and meetings aimed at spreading the best financial practices and technologies available.

NJCFE promotes financial literacy through numerous events and technologies. In 2014 NJCFE held its 8th Annual Financial Capability Upgrade Symposium, which attracted more than 150 educators, students and professionals. The Symposium offered free registration scholarships to the majority of attendees. Participants came together to discuss and develop the most cutting edge financial capability needs and tools. Sessions were aimed at educators, community leaders and finance professionals and included a national and state level financial literacy update, students loans, debt management, saving tools and resources, technology in personal finance and a keynote presentation by Neale Godfrey, CEO and president of Green$treet Commons. Laura Levine, president and CEO of Jump$tart, provided a 30,000 foot perspective on financial education and the many great Jump$tart initiatives.

NJCFE will hold our 9th Annual Financial Capability Symposium on Oct. 15 at Raritan Valley Community College, and will focus on a number of trending financial issues. With everything from student loans to retirement to spending addictions being discussed, the NJCFE expects another fantastic event and asks any interested parties to attend.
Last year NJCFE hosted nine free webinars geared toward students and teachers with more than 150 attendees. Topics included: current personal finance issues for financial educators, creative ways to teach personal finance, economic and finance teaching resources, how to teach students about investing and saving, finance apps and technology, credit cards and saving strategies. In 2015, NJCFE has already hosted four webinars and another four scheduled.

Finally, NJCFE in conjunction with affiliates hosted a “Job Help Fair” in April in Atlantic City to help the region’s large number of unemployed secure employment. More than 100 participants from Atlantic City and the surrounding communities met with for-profit job recruiters in retail, healthcare, gaming, banking and non-profit community assistance organizations. Participants were shown how to create resumes and were given the opportunity to meet with and submit resumes to local employers. The success of the event was noted in the local Atlantic City newspaper, The Press of Atlantic City.

NJCFE calls upon all interested parties in the tri-state area to take action and join in the fight for financial literacy. Individuals can become members for no fee, while organizations pay a nominal membership fee. By becoming a NJCFE member, individuals can share in the wealth of financial expertise owned by our members and administrators and begin proliferating this knowledge to the public. Additionally, NJCFE membership benefits include:

  • Networking opportunities with financial professionals
  • Admittance to our quarterly membership meetings
