Kentucky Jump$tart Coalition - July 2015

The Kentucky Jump$tart Coalition is a nonprofit organization with more than 50 partners – individuals representing business, education, government and nonprofit associations – who have joined together to improve the personal financial literacy of Kentuckians of all ages. Kentucky Jump$tart believes that all Kentuckians need to have the financial literacy necessary to make informed financial decisions and seeks to improve money management skills throughout the life cycle.

The Kentucky Jump$tart Coalition is a proud affiliate of the National Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy®.

Kentucky Jump$tart has several annual initiatives that we sponsor/support:

  • Middle School Poster Contest/Kentucky Saves Week Celebration: Kentucky Jump$tart co-sponsors the Kentucky Saves Week campaign each February. The winning entries in the coalition’s middle school poster contest are displayed in the state capitol, where Jump$tart co-hosts an awards celebration and information table.
  • Financial Literacy Teacher of the Year Award: This award honors a current Kentucky teacher in grades K-12 who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to teaching financial literacy topics and motivating students to learn about personal finance. 2015 marks the sixth year of the Kentucky coalition’s annual award. Some years we’ve had multiple winners, thanks to prize-matching donations from some of our partners. The grand prize includes $250 that can be used for financial literacy classroom materials or to attend training.
  • Co-Sponsorship of Financial Literacy Summit: Kentucky Jump$tart also co-sponsors and participates in the annual Life Fundamental$ Financial Literacy Summit sponsored by the Kentucky Council on Economic Education. Kentucky coalition partners display their financial literacy materials in the Jump$tart booth and may offer workshops. This event draws more than 100 teachers each year.
  • Participation in Career and Technical Teacher's Conference: Kentucky Jump$tart hosts a large booth and encourages partners to present at the annual Career and Technical Education Summer Program, which draws several thousand Kentucky teachers annually.  Handouts promote partner sessions on financial topics during the conference.
  • Financial Literacy Month in April: Each year, the state coalition petitions the governor to have April declared Financial Literacy Month. Partner events are highlighted at www.facebook.com/KYJumpstart.

2014 winners of the Kentucky Jump$tart Poster Contest and Kentucky Extension Piggy Bank Contest for Kentucky Saves Week show their work at the state capitol.

Make a Difference Locally - There are many ways to make a significant local impact. Parents can begin teaching their children about personal finance at a young age. Educators can incorporate personal finance in their curriculum. Policy makers can consider ways to improve personal finance education in school curriculums and professional development programs for teachers. And financial institutions can volunteer to work with a local school or district to provide classroom presentations or teacher support.

Kentucky Jump$tart partners just finished exhibiting and presenting at teacher’s conferences across the state – the LifeFundamental$ Financial Literacy Summit at three locations in June and the Career and Technical Education Summer Program in July. During these four events, teachers were invited to register to win a paid registration to the national Jump$tart educator conference.  (Winner to be announced soon!) In addition to this fabulous grand prize opportunity, teachers were welcomed to take free curriculum materials and resources and found out about speakers who can visit classrooms at no charge. Kentucky Jump$tart truly has a wealth of financial literacy resources available to educators at all grade levels!
