The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides Understanding Taxes (UT),  an interactive web-based curriculum that makes learning about taxes interesting, relevant, and fun. UT is a great resource for middle schools, high schools, community colleges, and the general public for learning more about the history, theory, and application of taxes in the United States. It is a great product designed by teachers for teachers.

Benefits to Educators:

  • Makes real-world connections to the classroom.
  • Ready and easy to use lesson plans and handouts.
  • Interactive and simulation activities.
  • Flexible, can be customized to fit the educators personal teaching style.
  • Student lessons can be used in the classroom or assigned as independent study.
  • Each lesson includes a link to the applicable national and state standards.

  • Helps you understand the basic concepts behind taxes and completion of tax returns.
  • Students can access a number of interactive simulations and activities, such as balancing a national budget or discover how tax dollars are spent.

The IRS is looking to engage educational institutions, organizations, and the general public to utilize Understanding Taxes and to spread the word that teaching and learning about taxes is easy as A-B-C.
