Oklahoma Jump$tart Coalition - March 2014

OK State Cents

The Oklahoma Jump$tart Coalition is a nonprofit organization comprised of businesses, individuals, financial institutions, tribal entities, K-12 schools, higher education campuses and government and non-profit agencies who believe that basic personal financial literacy is an essential skills for all Oklahomans. We work collectively to educate and empower youth and adults with information and resources necessary to make informed financial decisions.

Our member organizations serve a wide variety of individuals in our state. Some focus on financial education programming for youth; others concentrate on higher education; while others serve senior citizens. Membership in our Coalition is open to any individual or organization who is a stakeholder in financial education, whatever the age group, background or need of the group they serve. We exist to help the public connect with financial education resources, as well as help service providers hone their skills and find financial education resources for the audiences they serve.

We see ourselves as a venue to share best practices while helping organizations partner to best utilize their resources. Collaboration is our driving force. Each member is vital to the success of our Coalition’s outreach efforts.

  • Throughout the year we provide ongoing support of House Bill 1476, which created the Passport to Financial Literacy Act that became effective Jul. 1, 2007. The Passport requires high school seniors to satisfactorily complete 14 areas of personal finance instruction before they can graduate. Many of our member organizations routinely provide K-12 schools with supplemental resources, classroom workshops, and staff development to help school districts fulfill the Passport’s requirements.
  • In April we’ll celebrate our 10th annual Jump$tart Your Money (JYM) Week, a statewide educational initiative. This year’s JYM Week will featured a strategic social media campaign, promotional/educational materials distributed in the Wednesday edition of The Oklahoman, and Jump$tart Day at the Capitol, an open-house exhibition of financial literacy products, programs, and initiatives. This event reaches Oklahoma lawmakers, their staff and Capitol visitors.
  • 2013 marked our third Teacher’s Scholarship Contest. We provide registration, airfare and travel stipends for two outstanding K-12 teachers so they can attendthe Jump$tart National Educator Conference. Upon their return they join us at our membership meeting to share their experiences.
  • Each fall we partner with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Oklahoma City Branch to host the Financial Education in Oklahoma Conference. Our most recent conference was titled Into the Recovery: Rebuilding Financial Strength and Resilience and featured guest speakers Ray Boshara with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Dr. Kevin Simmons author of Deadly Season: Analysis of the 2011 Tornado Outbreaks, and Jason Yancey, Director of HOPE Coalition of America.

By working together, our Coalition helps raise awareness of the importance of financial education as a critical issue for Oklahomans.
