10/10/2014 - Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education

Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education® (AFCPE®) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, training, and certifying financial counselors and educators. It is committed to building, supporting and ensuring the integrity of the Personal Finance profession.

AFCPE offers rigorous certification programs in both Financial Counseling and Financial Coaching.

These programs train professionals to guide clients through a holistic counseling framework of life cycle financial education. The professional learns to use a tailored approach based on the needs of each individual client in order to affect lasting financial behavior change.

AFCPE certificants are equipped to navigate clients through financial crises such as credit and debt issues, bankruptcy, and foreclosure. Additionally, they work with clients to develop and implement effective spending plans, eliminate debt, build savings, and create meaningful solutions to maintain financial stability and reach the client’s financial goals.

Building upon the core knowledge of AFCPE counseling programs, we recently teamed with Sage Financial Solutions to deliver standardized, comprehensive financial coach training programs. The AFCPE financial coaching model is the only one in the field requiring a comprehensive educational background, experience in the field, and on-going continuing education.

AFCPE certificants work all over the world as researchers, educators, or financial aid advisors in schools, University Extension programs, private practice, financial planning firms, law firms, credit and debt repayment agencies, banks and credit unions, military financial counselors, government agencies, and many other organizations committed to improving the financial capability of individuals and families.

National Symposium
The AFCPE Annual Research & Training Symposium provides professionals with access to cutting edge research and resources that have useful applications for education and practice. The Symposium is a unique opportunity to network, share ideas, and make life-long connections in the field of financial counseling.

The 2014 Symposium is November 19-21, 2014 in Bellevue, WA.

Membership provides a strong professional network of colleagues in personal finance research, education and practice. Members include University and Cooperative Extension educators, military financial counselors, private practitioners, interest organizations, and government officials. Benefits of AFCPE membership include:

  • Quarterly newsletter: The Standard
  • Semi-annual research journal: Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning
  • Discounts to various continuing education trainings, including the Annual Research and Training Symposium
  • Financial Planning Association (FPA) Online Financial Counseling Community access

As a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, training, and certifying financial counselors and educators, AFCPE is interested in building relationships with partners to help AFCPE expand programs and services. Please contact AFCPE if you are interested in:

Military Initiatives

Since its inception in 2006, the FINRA Military Spouse program has awarded more than 1,300 fellowships to military spouses across the United States and the world. The fellowship covers the costs associated with completing the AFC® training and testing and is designed to meet the needs of military spouses through instructional webinars, self-scheduled exams, and flexible practicum opportunities. Through this partnership military spouses have developed rewarding careers while helping military families build brighter futures.

AFCPE joined with Visa Inc.’s Practical Money Skills, Consumer Action, the Consumer Federation of America, and Military Saves to form the Veterans Financial Coalition. The coalition is dedicated to serving the financial education and consumer protection needs of veterans and will offer free resources to aid the transition from the military into civilian life.

  • Financial Readiness Program

AFCPE, in partnership with American Express, is designing a financial readiness program for transitioning service members, veterans, and their families. The program will utilize the expertise of our Military Spouse Fellows.

AFC University Program
The AFC University Program is growing. Through approved University Programs, students can now pursue the AFC designation at a significantly reduced rate. The program enables students to work toward their AFC designation while pursuing their undergraduate, graduate or PhD degree. Upon graduation, the AFC certification mark provides university students an edge in their career, a close network of professionals, and a commitment to continuing education and ethics.

At the end of 2014, AFCPE will roll out a new mentorship program, designed to connect certification candidates or new AFCPE members with seasoned AFCPE professionals. The mentorship program will offer mentees additional support as they navigate the field of financial counseling, providing opportunity for professional growth. As mentors, professionals will have the opportunity to give back and guide the future leaders of the field.

AFCPE Career Center
In an effort to better support the career efforts of our certificants and to ensure hiring organizations have easy access to highly qualified AFCPE certified professionals; the online Career Center has been updated and redesigned. The Center is an excellent resource for job-seekers and employers alike!
