American Savings Education Council (ASEC)

WHAT WE DO:ASEC Logo
American Savings Education Council (ASEC) is a national partnership of public- and private-sector organizations committed to making saving and retirement planning a priority for all Americans. ASEC seeks to leverage the power of all its partners through the free flow of information and broad dissemination of the educational materials developed by all partners.  ASEC is a program of the Employee Benefit Research Institute, Education and Research Fund (EBRI-ERF), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization (www.ebri.org). ASEC does not lobby or take positions on public policy proposals.  Financial education information and materials are available at the ASEC Web site: Choose to Save®

WHAT WE OFFER:
The ASEC Web site www.ChoosetoSave.org was developed as a portal site for all individuals interested in finding savings and retirement planning tools and resources. It features both the print and interactive  Ballpark E$timate® planning worksheet, in English and Spanish, to help all individuals take the first step toward success by setting a goal based upon one's individual circumstances.

The Choose to Save® public education program has delivered savings education to the public through radio and television since 1997. All radio and television public service announcements (PSAs) are nationally distributed on the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and Associated Press (AP) Network feeds, with world-wide distribution via the American Armed Forces networks, military bases and navy ships.  Additionally, Choose to Save® PSAs and long programming, such as Mission Retirement, are currently running on the Starfish Television Network, a not-for-profit organization operated on the Dish Network.  All CTS PSAs and related materials are free to the public.  Such resources include:

  • ChoosetoSave.org, which includes more than 100 online calculators, brochures, savings tips, links to related resources, and other tools to help individuals and their families manage their finances.
  • A variety of free savings tools and brochures focused on topics such as Saving for Your Family's Future, Just Starting Out, The Magic of Compounding, Maximizing Your Company Savings Plan, Why Open an IRA, It's Never Too Late to Save, and many more.

ASEC Partners meet twice a year to network and coordinate programs. The Spring meeting includes the release of the annual Retirement Confidence Survey® (RCS). To review the current 2009 survey results, go to http://ebri.org/surveys/rcs/.

WHAT WE NEED:

  • High-quality, objective, and free financial education information, resources, and materials that we can link to from the Resources section of the ChoosetoSave.org Web site.   To submit your materials/links, please send an e-mail to Turn on JavaScript!  with "CTS Resource Link" as the subject line. Please include your name, affiliation, contact information (phone number and e-mail address), and a link to your materials.
  •  Use of Our Resources: We use two primary vehicles to share information with our coalition partners: The ASEC Portal, a comprehensive listing of the latest financial education initiatives from all of our partner institutions, and the ChoosetoSave.org Web site.  If you are involved in a project that you would like to share with the ASEC partnership and the Internet community, please submit a short paragraph describing it to Turn on JavaScript!.  Be sure to include a contact name, phone number, and e-mail address.

ASEC Community Outreach in Washington, DC area
This summer, ASEC has been actively engaging in community outreach at local festivals and fairs in the Washington, DC area. Thus far, the organization has participated in the Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront Festival (June 20-21) and the Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle (June 27-28). Over the next few months, it will also be participating in the Fauquier County Fair (VA), Prince George's County Fair (MD), and Adams Morgan Day. These events provide us with a great opportunity to interact with the community, distribute packets of financial education resources from a variety of ASEC partners, and provide motivation to individuals who are struggling financially to Choose to Save. ® If you know of an upcoming event, would like to volunteer for one of the aforementioned festivals, or have distribution materials to include in the packets, please email Turn on JavaScript!.
