WHAT WE DO

The SIFMA Foundation fosters knowledge and understanding of the financial markets for individuals of all backgrounds, with a focus on youth. Drawing on the involvement and expertise of educators and the financial industry, the SIFMA Foundation provides financial education programs and tools that strengthen economic opportunity across communities and increase individuals’ access to the benefits of the global marketplace.

WHAT’S NEW

  • InvestWrite National Essay Competition
    In addition to being a national writing competition, where the winners have the opportunity to earn a trip to New York City’s historic financial district, the annual InvestWrite national essay competition is a performance-based assessment tool. This year’s essay questions address the impact of economic and social changes on long-term investments. Elementary school students must evaluate a selected company’s competitors and the impact of new trends. Middle school students evaluate risk. High school students analyze life lessons they’ve learned from the Stock Market Game and prioritize their newfound knowledge. The deadline for this year’s InvestWrite entries is April 13. 
     
  • Teacher Support Center
    The SIFMA Foundation provides many opportunities for schools, after-school programs, and parents to teach grades 4-12 students the fundamental financial skills they will need to become informed participants in our democracy and economy. This school year we launched a completely new Teacher Support Center. Stock Market Game teachers access the Teacher Support Center for lesson plans to teach fundamental investment concepts, projects to extend their students’ learning, and additional resources to support their implementation of the Stock Market Game program.   • Invest It Forward
    Since launching in 2014 for Financial Literacy, Month the SIFMA Foundation’s newest educational program Invest It Forward has tracked more than 50,000 volunteers across the country who have engaged their local communities in learning about the importance of the capital markets. For Financial Literacy Month 2016, Invest It Forward’s newly launched “IIF MatchMe” tool makes the process of finding experienced financial industry volunteers as classroom guest speakers even easier.   • Capitol Hill Challenge™ 
    The 12th Annual Capitol Hill Challenge launched this past February. The Capitol Hill Challenge is an invitation-only national portfolio competition that matches schools to their member of Congress. Once again, 100 percent of Congress is participating. Winners of the Capitol Hill Challenge earn a trip to Washington DC where they meet their member of Congress, tour national landmarks, and recognized in a special awards ceremony. WHAT WE OFFER

  • The Stock Market Game™ Program
    For many students the Stock Market Game program is their first experience of the capital markets. Students in the Stock Market Game work in teams to grow a virtual $100,000 by investing a portion of it or all of it in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. As they build and manage their investment portfolios, they practice essential research, ELA, math, and other literacy skills. The Stock Market Game prepares grade 4-12 students for college and careers through hands-on activities and firsthand experiences. It prepares them for financially independent lives, while providing them with real-world opportunities to apply the academic skills they are taught in the classroom. Nearly 600,000 students take part every school year across all 50 states and around the world with support from hundreds of financial firms, corporate and private foundations, and individuals.   • InvestWrite® 
    Through the annual InvestWrite national essay competition, students across the Unites States apply their critical thinking skills and the financial concepts they have learned in the Stock Market Game program to address a long-term saving and investing scenario. The competition takes place twice a year, once during the fall semester and once again in the spring semester.  Local and national prizes are awarded to the best submissions in each semester –including a trip to New York City’s famous financial district. Approximately 20,000 student essays are evaluated annually by teachers and 6,000 financial professionals serving as volunteer judges. For more information visit www.investwrite.org.
     
  • Invest It Forward
    Invest It Forward connects classrooms with financial professionals to facilitate financial capability and capital markets literacy through a specially designed curriculum developed in partnership with the SIFMA Foundation and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and an online matching system for teachers and volunteers to coordinate classroom visits across the country. It is an industry-wide initiative tapping hundreds of financial firms that are committed to giving young Americans a solid understanding of the capital markets and the tools to achieve their dreams.   • Capitol Hill Challenge™
    The Capitol Hill Challenge is a national invitation-only portfolio competition that matches schools in the Stock Market Game with their Members of Congress. The 10 top performing high school and middle school teams earn a trip to Washington, DC. Since its inception in 2004, more than 60,000 students across the country have been invited to participate. WHAT WE NEED

For 40 years, the SIFMA Foundation has provided programming that engages 4th-12thgrade students in learning about the capital markets and their role in the maintaining the welfare of the economy, while simultaneously helping them see the real-world application of the math, English, and other academic content they learn in the classroom. The SIFMA Foundation is seeking teachers who share the belief “financial capability empowers us as citizens of a democracy. It allows us to better participate in critical policy debates that will shape our future for decades to come,” which John W. Rogers, chairman of the President's Advisory Council wrote in a 2015 youth financial capability report.
